Vodafone Wallet was a mobile payment service offered by the operator through an application. However, Vodafone removed this feature to prioritize other services such as Vodafone Pass and Vodafone TV.What do I need to know?
What is Vodafone Wallet?
Vodafone Wallet was born as a service to pay via mobile through its Vodafone Wallet application. It is a service to simplify the forms of payment and so that it is not necessary to carry so many cards or cash with you.
It is an application for your mobile that uses NFC wireless technology to transmit data between two devices and make payment with the mobile .
To pay with your mobile with Vodafone Wallet, you had to register your Visa or Mastercard cards from any bank within the application.
After registering, you will receive a Vodafone email with the registration data. When you went to make a payment with your smartphone, you just had to select the card with which you want to make the payment.
In addition, Vodafone Wallet was compatible with Paypal and allowed you to configure the security level of your credit cards. You could choose in which cases you wanted the PIN code of your card to be requested.
Vodafone Wallet closes permanently
On June 28, 2018 , the British operator permanently closed the Vodafone Wallet service and decided to focus on services, such as television, with new services when hiring Vodafone TV at a good price , instead of entering other markets where you don’t have a competitive advantage.
This closure was mainly motivated by the fact that the operator cannot compete with the financial institutions themselves, which, in addition to paying with their mobile phones, offer other services through their applications, such as sending money instantly and free of charge to any bank through Bizum.
However, although Vodafone Wallet has disappeared, the company continues to give the option of making payments to third parties through your Vodafone bill :Payments to third parties in Vodafone
Can I get the Vodafone Wallet for free?
Vodafone Wallet was a free service . It was only necessary to have a compatible mobile phone and install the Vodafone Wallet application (when it was available), you only had to be aware of renewing the Vodafone app account and keep it updated to its latest version.
If you need to pay with your mobile, you can do so through the app of your bank as an alternative to Vodafone Wallet , such as Bankinter Vodafone . Virtually all banking applications already include this option to pay for free with your mobile or send instant money to your friends through Bizum.
Currently, the British operator offers new services and promotions to the customers of the Vodafone club :
- Vodafone Pass
- HBO Spain with Vodafone
- Amazon Prime free with Vodafone
- 3 months free on TIDAL with Vodafone
Compatible phones with Vodafone Wallet
The phones compatible with Vodafone Wallet were those that have an NFC chip and that belong to Vodafone (free mobiles do not work).
Currently, practically all devices include NFC technology, which you can use with your bank’s app to pay for your purchases without having to use your credit or debit card.
How do I know if my mobile has NFC?
You can find out if your mobile has NFC in the data sheet of your smartphone by looking for the characteristics online. If you do not remember the exact model of your mobile phone, you can check it in the settings application of your smartphone:
- On Android : go to “Settings” and go to “Wireless and networks”. You can also check it by displaying the notification bar if the NFC icon is found or not.
- In the case of iPhone , all devices incorporate NFC technology. Although the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and 6s Plus will only be able to use NFC within Apple Pay, later models can already use NFC without restrictions.
